This project-based course covers modern tools and methods for product design and development including the opportunity to understand a system by examining the linkages and interactions between the elements that compose the entirety of the system. The cornerstone project asks students conceive, design and prototype a physical product that ultimately creates a solution to a difficult problem. Class sessions employ cases and hands-on exercises to reinforce the key ideas. Topics include identifying customer needs, concept generation, product architecture, and design manufacturing.
Identify a problem that currently exists and potential solutions to the problem using tools that students will develop
Consider the feasibility of the product and how to address potential pitfalls of its use
Develop a prototype that will engage consumers and create a strategy for its production and promotion.
