This year-long senior English course will focus on the study of literature through the lens of gender and sexuality. This course builds on reading, writing, thinking and speaking skills that are central to required English classes. Like other senior English courses, identity and self-reflection are key components; additionally, this course explores the social construction of gender and sexuality and the impact this has on the individual. As such, course materials contain mature themes, language and topics. Intersectionality and queer theory are lenses through which students will read, analyze, and discuss current events and pop culture. Texts may include Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, and Alice Walker’s The Color Purple; and essays by authors such as James Baldwin, Akwaeke Emezi, and Gloria Anzaldúa.
