Remember Dr. Seuss? Charlotte’s Web? Ever thought Harry Potter would make great fodder for an English discussion? Like adult literature, great children's literature explores the meaning of life and gives insight into human behavior and to our culture. Revisiting and deconstructing children's literature as older readers gives us a better understanding of these texts and how they work. In this course, we will bring our critical, analytical, and reflective reading, writing, and thinking skills to bear on fairy tales, children’s fantasy and science fiction, classic chapter books, and picture books. The course culminates in a creative writing project in which students produce a picture book in partnership with a Child Lab peer reviewer. This course does not fulfill graduation requirements in English.
