This college preparatory program is designed for students who are interested in improving their language and reasoning skills. Oral and writing skills are emphasized. Outside work is expected. Assignments include reading, vocabulary building, research, thesis statement development, analytical writing and personal writing. Exercises are designed to reinforce learning and to emphasize clarity in writing. Representative examples of literature include The Things They Carried, The Stranger, and The Odyssey. Although the quantity of reading assigned varies with the difficulty of the work, typical reading is 15 pages per night.
Essential Skills:
Reading
Students will learn to decode individual words and sentences
Students will improve close passage reading, maintaining understanding throughout paragraphs
Students will build up a working vocabulary
Students will understand how the literary devices and stylistic elements of a text lead to its larger meanings
Students will understand the purpose and use of rhetorical devices
Students will read and learn to distinguish between fiction and non-fiction
Writing
Students will increase clarity through enhanced vocabulary and sentence structure work
Students will diversify repertoire of writing styles
Students will engage in personal Writing (leading to the Senior Paper)
Students will learn to implement rhetorical devices
Students will fuse analytical writing with personal writing while examining ways to organize and analyze that expand on the structured 5-paragraph essay format
Speaking & Listening
Students will engage in regular sessions of reading out loud in small groups or individually with teacher
Students will receive specific emphasis on informal class participation
Students will engage in formal and informal class presentations (including rehearsals and feedback)
Students will practice and deliver a final Senior Presentation
