This college preparatory program is designed for students whose achievement indicates the need for additional time and practice in learning and understanding fundamental skills. Students should expect outside reading and written homework on a regular basis. Representative examples of the literature include Romeo and Juliet, Raisin in the Sun, and selected short stories. Although quantity of reading assigned varies with the difficulty of the work, typical reading is 10-20 pages per night.
Essential Skills:
Reading
Students will be able to consistently make logical inferences from a text about characters, relationships, themes, and language while supporting those ideas with concrete details.
Students will be able to demonstrate consistent use of reading strategies and processes effectively.
Students will be able to read literal details to form inferences and abstract understandings
Students will be able to complete a close reading of an author’s language and devices used in a text
Writing
Students will be able to consistently write clearly, directly, and specifically.
Students will be able to compose arguable topic sentences and/or thesis statements, which are then supported by explicit reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
Students will be able to incorporate and cite evidence
Students will be able to identify and correct errors with commas, comma splices, run-ons (fused sentence), and fragments.
Students will be able to use sentence combining strategies to write clear and sophisticated sentences for a variety of purposes.
Speaking & Listening
Students will be able to initiate and participate in the conversation by listening to and building on the ideas of others and by using purposeful evidence.
Students will be able to initiate and participate in the conversation by listening to and building on the ideas of others in a positive and productive manner.
Students will develop listening comprehension skills through multimedia resources
