This honors program is designed for students with high achievement and high interest in reading and the effective use of language. Students in this level assume great responsibility for independent learning. Honors students should expect to complete extensive outside reading and written homework assignments. Representative examples of the literature include Romeo and Juliet, A Tale of Two Cities, Frankenstein, and Lord of the Flies. Although the quantity of reading assigned varies with the difficulty of the work, typical reading is 30-35 pages per night.
Essential Skills:
Reading
Students will be able to read actively for author’s use of language (connotation)
Students will be able to read actively for literary devices (symbol, allusion, metaphor, motif, etc.)
Writing
Students will be able to write clearly, directly, and specifically.
Students will be able to compose arguable topic sentences and/or thesis statements, which are then supported by explicit reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
Students will be able to smoothly incorporate/ embed and cite evidence.
Students will be able to identify and correct errors with commas, comma splices, run-ons (fused sentence), and fragments.
Students will be able to craft and punctuate a variety of sentence types depending on their purpose and audience.
Speaking & Listening
Students will practice presentation skills.
Students will practice whole class discussion skills (listening to classmates’ perspectives, building meaning)
Students will participate in Socratic seminars and graded discussions
