Astronomer

Dr. Jocelyn Gill, an astronomer who worked with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, graduated from Wellesley College in 1938. With a significant interest in astronomy, she obtained her master’s degree from the Yerkes Observatory of the University of Chicago, and she received her doctorate from Yale University.

Dr. Gill taught at numerous colleges and universities before joining the team at NASA in 1961. She served as chief of in-flight sciences for manned space programs, and she developed experiments for the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space missions. In 1966, Dr. Gill received the Federal Woman’s Award from President Johnson, and, that same year, she was named the Multiple Sclerosis Woman of the Year by Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey.

Dr. Gill retired from NASA in 1973 and resided in Cincinnati until her death in 1984.
