Pediatrician, Public Health Activist

After graduating from Wellesley in 1944, Florence Marshall obtained her M.D. from Cornell University Medical College in 1948. From 1949 to 1952, Dr. Marshall was a resident in pediatrics at the New York Hospital, where she became the assistant director of the New York Hospital’s Pediatric Out-Patient Department as well as the assistant director of the Comprehensive Care and Teaching Program at Cornell University Medical College, positions she held concurrently until 1954. After serving on the medical staff of the Nassau County Cerebral Palsy Center from 1954 to 1956, Dr. Marshall traveled to the West Indies where she was chief of pediatrics at the Hôpital Albert Schweitzer in Haiti.

Since Dr. Marshall’s return to New York in 1981, she served as director for Coordination of Care for Chronically Ill Children program and as director of the Focus on Families program. Additionally, she was a member of the New York Children’s Health Projects, attending to the needs of homeless children and their families.

Dr. Marshall held staff positions at the Jewish-Hillside Medical Center on Long Island, Mercy Hospital, and the Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn and Queens, and was a consultant to Helen Keller International and the Vitamin A Blindness Prevention program.

Dr. Marshall died in February 2002 from complications with cancer at the age of 80.
