Economist, Social Security and Pensions Consultant

Alicia Haydock Munnell graduated from Wellesley in 1964 as a member of Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in economics. Boston University granted her an M.A. in 1966 and, in 1985, named her to its Academy of Distinguished Alumni. Her Ph.D. in economics, specializing in social security and private pension plans, was conferred by Harvard University in 1973.

After earning her doctorate, Dr. Munnell began working for the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, and in 1984, she became the senior vice president and director of research. Dr. Munnell also served as president and cofounder of the National Academy of Social Insurance, as president of the Boston Economic Club, and served on the board of directors for the Pension Rights Center.

Dr. Munnell is a member of the National Academy of Science’s Institute of Medicine, the International Institute of Public Finance, the National Academy of Public Administration, the Pension Research Council of the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce and a variety of advisory bodies at state and national levels. From 1995 to 1997, Dr. Munnell served as a member of the President's Council of Economic Advisers and, from 1993 to 1995, was the assistant secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy.

Currently, Dr. Munnell is the Peter F. Drucker Professor of Management Sciences at Boston College's Carroll School of Management. She also serves as the director of the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College.
