Addition and subtraction of fractions (Year 7)

Numerator: The number above the fraction line. Represents how many parts are taken.

Denominator: The number below the fraction line. The number represents the total number of equal parts.  

Commutative: the order of the operations do not matter. 

Unit Fraction: A fraction where the numerator is 1 and the denominator is a positive integer.

Improper Fraction: A fraction where the numerator is greater than the denominator.

Mixed Fraction: A whole number and a fraction combined into one "mixed" number. (also called mixed numbers)

Integer: A number with no fractional part (no decimals). (e.g. -16, -3, 0, 1, 198)
