Grade Level: OCS
A preparatory course for Fundamentals of Algebra, this course acquaints the student with different number systems through mathematical language consisting of symbols and new concepts dealing with sets. Primary goals are to teach students to deal with variables and polynomials through language and application as well as to solve equations.
Grade Level: 9-10
This course is a preparatory course for math I. Students are introduced to algebra, geometry, and other mathematical topics that are integrated in a format that connects mathematics to students’ lives and the world of work.
Grade Level: 9-12
Math I provides students the opportunity to study concepts of algebra, geometry, functions, number and operations, statistics and modeling throughout the course. These concepts include expressions in the real number system, creating and reasoning with equations and inequalities, interpreting and building simple functions, expressing geometric properties and interpreting categorical and quantitative data. The final exam is the North Carolina End-of-Course Test based on the Common Core Math 1 Standards.
Grade Level: 9-12
Prerequisite: Math I
This course continues a progression of the standards established in Math I. In addition to these standards, Math II includes: polynomials, congruence and similarity of figures, trigonometry with triangles, modeling with geometry, probability, making inferences and justifying conclusions.
Grade Level: 9-10
Prerequisite: B in Math I recommended
This is an accelerated, expanded, and demanding course designed to cover the topics of Math II in depth. B in Math I and/or a Level IV on EOC recommended.
Grade Level: 9-12
Prerequisite: Math I & Math II
Progresses from the standards learned in Math I and Math II. In addition to these standards, Math III extends to include algebraic concepts such as: the complex number system, inverse functions, trigonometric functions and the unit circle. Math III also includes the geometric concepts of conics and circles.
Grade Level: 9-12
Prerequisite: B in Math II
Designed for those students who have potential for outstanding performance in mathematics, Math III Honors is an accelerated, expanded, and demanding course. Students will work with real, irrational and imaginary numbers, solving systems of equations, problem solving with logarithms, conic sections and polynomials.
Grade Level: 11-12
Prerequisite: Math I, Math II, Math III
NC Math 4 focuses on functions and statistical thinking, continuing the study of algebra, functions, trigonometry and statistical concepts previously experienced in NC Math 1-3. The course is designed to be a capstone to introductory statistical concepts. Additionally, the course intentionally integrates concepts from algebra and functions to demonstrate the close relationship between algebraic reasoning as applied to the characteristics and behaviors of more complex functions.
Grade Level: 11-12
Prerequisite: B in Math III
This is an accelerated, expanded, and demanding course designed to cover the topics of Math IV in depth. B in Math III and/or a Level IV on Math 3 EOC recommended.
Grade Level: OCS
Prerequisite: Introduction to Mathematics I
This course uses the core standards to provide students a more complex mathematical curriculum. Following the format studied in Introduction to Mathematics, the course covers number and operations, geometry, measurement, algebra, statistics and probability, while adding the area of discrete algebra. Students will be required to use ratios and rates to solve problems and use properties of exponents to simplify expressions. They will use properties and strategies to combine and factor algebraic expressions, use direct and indirect variations to solve problems, analyze patterns of change in functional relationships, understand functions based on mathematical and real world phenomena, and use strategies to find solutions for linear and exponential relationships. They will be required to analyze properties of geometric shapes in the Cartesian coordinate system and use formulas to solve problems involving area and volume. They will analyze statistical distributions in terms of the relationships among shape, center, spread and outliers and infer trends in bivariate data. Students will use vertex-edge graphs to route and optimize critical paths. At the completion of this course, students must be assessed using the Math I EOC with documented accommodations/modifications.
Grade Level: OCS
Prerequisite: NC Math I
This course focuses on the application of skills needed for independent living. Emphasis is placed on financial management and planning. Students will develop an understanding of state and federal income taxes, wages compensation, and the use of credit. They will be introduced to different types of insurance to meet personal needs while applying math skills to consumer spending.
Grade Level: 10-11 (Placement determined by PreACT score)
Prerequisite: N/A
ACT/College Prep course will emphasize ACT test-taking strategies, specifically math skills, language skills, reading skills, and science-reasoning skills. Students will study and practice listening and note taking techniques, test taking strategies, questioning and thinking skills, information retrieval, pre-ACT test practice, memory technique, reading in the content areas, vocabulary development, and college application completion with the central goal to increase both subtest scores and composite scores. All four ACT subtests will be reviewed: English, Math, Reading, and Science Reasoning.
