Key stage 4

The provisions of the National Curriculum (Guernsey) require all students aged between 14 and 16 to study a balanced course in Science which includes elements of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

In Key Stage 4 all students will pursue courses which lead to two GCSE qualifications in Combined Science. The students may begin the Science GCSE course as part of the year 9 curriculum. Science examinations will be taken at the end of year 11 for all courses.

Success at grade B and above in these double Science provides students with the entry requirements for Science courses in the sixth form. The two qualifications along with appropriate grades at GCSE Advanced Level or I.B also provide access to courses in Science, Engineering and Medicine at all UK universities.

In addition, the school also provides the opportunity for students in year 10 to follow courses which lead to three GCSE qualifications in Biology Chemistry and Physics. These three courses will be completed in the same time as the two described above but students will be required to progress at a faster rate. This route offers a much richer experience of Science. Students will be advised whether or not they should access the triple science route strictly on the basis of their progress in Science so far, including scores achieved in end of topic tests and teacher assessments.
