“When I'm alone, and it’s very quiet, he calls to me.” It all started in 1964. Ed and Lorraine investigated a shop where a woman claimed that her father was haunted by a demon, which ties directly into the Smule family hauntings. West Pittston, Pennsylvania, 1986. The Smule family had been experiencing hauntings in their home. And it all stemmed from a mirror that 14-year-old Heather had received as a confirmation present from her grandparents. The mirror showed more than just a reflection; it showed violent imagery of lives that had been claimed by the demonic entity using the mirror as a sanctuary. In this movie, specifically, there are numerous instances where the directors took the cinematic aspect to the next level. From camera angles to creating the illusion of things disappearing in plain sight, the special effects are outstanding. Some parts seemed exaggerated, but these instances fit into the storyline perfectly. Jumpscares, dark corners, and creepy basements are some of the most sought-after things in horror movies. There are parts of this movie that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat. And Michael Chaves, the director of the Conjuring series, did an amazing job at excising those sought-after aspects that fans crave. Chaves used special effects and CGI to create some of the freakiest ghosts I've seen to date. Leigh Jones and Gabrielle Downey did a fabulous job portraying and acting out the paranormal in this movie. They had horrifying accuracy at making this movie feel real, and that fits perfectly into this franchise as a whole. The two main ghosts in the movie are the Axeman and the old crone. While neither of these characters has an actual name, the acting and costuming of these two characters make their performances out of this world. But we can't talk about the ghosts without talking about the three most important characters in this franchise. Ed, Lorraine, and Judy Warran are played by three phenomenal actors: Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, and Mia Tomlinson. These three did an incredible job at portraying the characters accurately. In one part of the movie, Mia Tomlinson, who plays Judy, gets possessed by the mirror demon. She did a wonderful job of going between being her character and the demon that possessed Judy. From the cinematic aspect of everything to how accurately it was cast, this movie was amazing in so many ways. The Conjuring: Last Rights was an outstanding movie that put an end to an iconic series.
