PSAT 8/9 Results

What does the PSAT 8/9 measure? The test measures the skills and knowledge that research shows are the most essential for college and career readiness and success, at the level content and skill appropriate for eighth and ninth grades. The Reading Test measures comprehension and reasoning skills and focuses on close reading of passages in a wide array of subject areas. The Writing and Language Test measures a range of skills including command of evidence, expression of ideas, and the use of standard English conventions in grammar and punctuation. The Math Test covers a range of math practices, with an emphasis on problem solving, modeling, using tools strategically, and using algebraic structure.

Percentile Test Results for our 8th graders are compared nationally to students who complete the PSAT 8/9 in both eighth grade and ninth grade. *Many schools do not offer the test for eighth grade students. 34% of our 8th graders met the math benchmark in this test administration, however, ninth graders who have had "algebra" would be expected to perform better on the PSAT 8/9 math test. When this exam was administered in October, WCUSD eighth graders are either learning "pre-algebra" or just entering "algebra" . Do not let your students PSAT Math score discourage you! Looking forward, the exact same PSAT 8/9 content will be completed in the Spring semester of freshmen year, when students have had exposure to more algebraic content in algebra 101, 102, or 103 at Williamsville High School. Your student's math score should reflect this growth upon the next PSAT 8/9 administration in April of 2019. It is likely that several students will "meet the math benchmark" for college readiness then.

WJHS students have setup collegeboard accounts and khan academy accounts that utlize their PSAT results for college, career, and acadmic support tools. When students log in they can access a suggested study plan at satpractice.org or see their actual PSAT 8/9 score report (a physical copy was handed out) on the collegeboard.org. In addition, the collegeboard offers free tools to help our young learners search for careers and college majors, like Roadtrip Nation. Students can also compare colleges and review the application tools. These accounts will be available to students next year and beyond to make sure they are successful in their post-secondary goal planning.
