Welcome to the Beyond the Bell Website. In this website, you will find section on Music & Festivals, Immigration, Sports, the Arts, and Pop Culture. Before visiting the museum check out the introduction video to get an idea of what the museum has to offer. Below you will find many activities to use prior to the visit, during your visit, and after you leave.

We designed this website to show different themes you will see while in the exhibit and added activities that help deepen learning. Please feel free to use any and all the information provided.

MUSIC AND FESTIVALS

In this section you will find two diferent activitys that are about historical events that have occured in philadelphia. Both activities are hands on and can be done post or prior to coming to the museum.

Chinese Lantern Festival

Activity 1

Chinese Lanterns

The students will be designing their own Chinese Lanterns! This activity can be done either before or after visiting the muesum.

Dragon Boat Racing

In this activity students will be learning about the history of dragon boat racing, they will also be building a paper dragon boat.

IMMIGRATION

Immigration is the movement of people to one area to another. This video shares some facts that we believe may be of use when touring the exhibit.

Activity one - Why do people immigrate

People immigrated to Philadelphia from all over the world. This activity will provide a visual for students to see where most people immigrated from.

This is a graphic organizer for students to do while they are walking around the museum.

This activity is meant to be done after visiting the museum. Use what you learned at the museum, in the first two activities and in the reading to create a visual to show what you have learned.

Throughout this exhibit you explore and learn about Philadelphia's heritage. This is the Philadelphia sports heritage section. In this section you will learn about Philadelphia various sports teams and how these sports team have shaped Philadelphia history. Student will complete an activity prior to the worksheet, which asks the students questions about information they may have known previously. The students will then complete a worksheet at the exhibit which as them to find answers to questions that the exhibit will explain to them. Finally, after visiting the museum, students will participate in a kahoot reviewing the knowledge they learn at the sports section of the museum.

ACTIVITY 1

This is a worksheet the class will fill out prior to attending the museum, they will be able to use this as a guide to what they will learn about in the museum.

An activity for students to complete while they are visiting the museum. They will use the sports exhibit to help them answer the questions and get engaged in reviewing the exhibit.

A Kahoot which we will use as a form of assesment. This will allow for students to have fun with the information, while still making sure they grasp it.

DESCRIPTION: Throughout the WCU Beyond the Bell exhibit, you will see artwork in all forms. Within this section, you will watch a video describing the art-specific examples within the museum. Following, you will see two activities we have created to engage students in their learning. One is to be completed prior to visiting and one will be completed after leaving.

This Is a short Introductory video going over the arts and fashion within Philadelphia.

This will be a worksheet students will begin to fill out before coming to the museum. Students will fill out the Know section with Information they know about art, specifically about the different types of art within Philadelphia. Students will fill out the Want To Know section with questions they might want to be answered while In the museum. The students should bring this worksheet with them to fill out the Learned section based on what they learned about art from the exhibit.

This is the post activity for the art section of the museum. Students will create their own square that is influenced by their heritage and culture, the things that they are interested in, and/or the things in their community. After everyone creates their square, the class will come together and combine all of the squares to make one big quilt!

POP CULTURE

Welcome to the pop culture section! Pop Culture is the set of practices, beliefs, and objects that embody the most broadly shared meanings of a social system. In other words, pop culture is made up of the things that make a place and its people unique. This can include anything, from movies to TV shows to famous celebrities. Prior to visiting the museum, students will learn more about what pop culture is in a broad sense in our first activity. They will do this by creating a KWL chart, as well as competing in a Kahoot! Following their visit, students will participate in the Philadelphia Movie Pitch, where they will have the opportunity to create a movie using their newfound knowledge of the city.

In this short video, students will be introduced to the museum by Ms. Kedziora In addition, they will review the definition of Pop Culture and what it is comprised of. Welcome to the pop culture section!

Pre- EXHIBIT "Introducing Pop culture"

In this activity, students will be introduced to the concept of what is pop culture and pop culture in Philadelphia specifically. The goal of these activities is to engage students' curiosity about what they might get to see in the exhibit. This includes a Kahoot to do with students asking them about pop culture's basics. Post-EXHIBIT "Philadelphia Movie Pitch"

Creating your own Philadelphia movie!

In this post-museum activity, students will engage with all the exhibits they saw in order to create a pitch for a movie set in Philadelphia. Students will take their new knowledge of things that happened in Philadelphia and intertwine them into an idea for a movie that might be made. They will focus on characters, plot lines and the other exhibits highlighted. This activity is a culminating activity for the pop culture exhibit and the museum as a whole. Our goal with this activity is for students to understand how different elements of culture come together to create one larger experience.
