In 2021, digital artist and animator Cypopps created a comic visualizing autism spectrum disorder as a soup. This soup consists of a mix of autistic traits, illustrating how each autistic person's "soup" is made up of different traits. Like ingredients in a soup, each autistic individual has their own mix of traits in their own amounts. As an alternative to the slider visualization, the soup metaphor emphasizes how each autistic person has their own unique experience; there isn't "more" or "worse" autism.
Neurosoup's goal is to expand the soup metaphor to a broader audience. Just as each autistic person's soup is unique to them, neurodiversity speaks to the importance of diversity in cognitive function and information processing. As the population of neurodivergent students in higher education increases, it becomes more and more critical to highlight diverse experiences of the brain. Every individual has their own soup of cognitive functioning.
West Chester University of Pennsylvania is dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in all spaces. This mission is accomplished through diversity focused training & education, upholding policy to provide equal opportunities for all individuals, advocating for resources to enhance institutional diversity, and other forms of innovation for a positive campus climate.
However, while there are extensive resources for university faculty and autistic students, there is a lack of both resources for students looking to better understand neurodiversity as well as comprehensive information about neurodivergence overall.
Neurosoup exists to provide an accessible source of information about neurodiversity. The information compiled here is intended to serve as an introduction to neurodivergence, neurodiversity, its place in higher education, and how to foster neurodiversity in the community. Neurosoup is designed to create a foundation of a deeper understanding of these themes to be expanded upon with further reading, involved discussions, and educational programming.
"The resources provided by Neurosoup have been a game-changer for me in understanding and supporting the neurodiverse community at our university. I have gained insights that help me identify and address barriers to learning and change my approach to teaching to better serve the full community of WCU students. Engaging with Neurosoup is a must for any educator committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for neurodivergent students."
"Neurosoup provides valuable information for individuals seeking to enhance their understanding of neurodiversity. It offers solid, understandable explanations and covers a wide range of neurodiverse topics, making it a beneficial resource to share with others."
