A Reader’s Workshop model is used to teach Reading. This approach allows children to read and work in small groups at a comfortable instructional level as well as participate in shared reading experiences using various pieces of literature. The small groups are flexible and children are never locked into a specific group. The units of study are: Becoming a Big Kid Reader, Becoming Experts, Tackling Longer Words and Longer Books, Growing Knowledge Together and Stepping Into the World of Story.

We use a combination of the Phonics Units of Study and a district created word study program aligned to the Science of Reading that focuses on both decoding and encoding words. These units are researched-based and student centered. This approach to phonics is very much tied to our reading and writing programs for a seamless
connection across multiple content areas. Snap words for the unit will be sent home quarterly for continual practice. For mastery of snap words, your child needs to be able to read and spell them. Throughout the units, students are assessments to see the progress in the skills that are taught. At the end of each unit, unit assessments will be given assessing the skills from that unit. Please make time for your child to practice spelling the unit’s snap words.
We will learn about several topics in relation to our communities and other communities. The units of study are Active Citizenship, Rural, Urban, and Suburban Communities, and Geography of Communities. We will also do two
inquiry units on interdependence and how we shape our environment.
