Did you know that some squirrels are completely black? This happens when a type of squirrel called a fox squirrel has a baby with a common gray squirrel. Having black fur can be helpful to squirrels, as black absorbs lots of light, which keeps the squirrels warm. Simone here is a common gray squirrel, but, like many mostly gray squirrels, she has a bit of brown around her face and paws

Right now, Rocky the raccoon is wearing a mask, but he also has a natural mask pattern under his eyes, like all raccoons! The dark black mask under raccoons’ eyes helps them see better at night by reducing glare. It also helps raccoons recognize each other! Raccoons are nocturnal, meaning they only come out at night. Being black and white helps Rocky blend in with shadows in the dark.

Some birds are extremely colorful, but Stella the sparrow rocks classic browns and grays! In many species of birds, the males have vibrant feathers to attract mates, and the females are more subdued to camouflage so they can protect the nest. However, in Stella’s case, she’s no less colorful than a male sparrow would be! Sparrows’ ability to blend in no matter their sex has helped them become an extremely plentiful species.

Opal the opossum loves to spend time in trees! Her gray fur is tinged with bits of brown, which looks a lot like bark from far away. From below, her white face might look like a bit of sky poking through the leaves. These features help her camouflage and hide from predators on the ground!
