What is the Select-to-Speak feature? Select-to-Speak features a built-in screen reader on the Chromebook that will read aloud the content of websites to the student. This feature is handy for students who struggle with reading skills and is also useful for ESL (English as a Second Language) students. This tutorial shows you how to enable and disable the Select-to-Speak feature on the Chromebook.
1.Sign into your Chromebook.
2. Click on the clock in the lower right hand corner of the screen.
3. Click Accessibility.
4. Click the Select to Speak feature. A green check mark will appear beside of it when it is enabled. To disable it, click it again to turn off the green check mark.
Note: Anytime you hear the Chromebook speaking when it is not supposed to be doing so, the Select-to-Speak option is enabled. Turning it off will solve the problem of hearing "phantom" voices coming from the Chromebook. Students have often enabled this feature when exploring around the device's settings.
5. When Select to Speak is enabled, you can also see a small speaker icon appear to the left of the clock. When the feature is disabled, the speaker icon will disappear.
