After you have accumulated a large number of emails saved in your Gmail inbox, it can be overwhelming to keep everything organized. If you are looking for a way to organize your emails, you might be thinking that you want to create a series of folders. However, Gmail uses Labels instead of folders to organize emails. The labels are actually like folders since they categorize a group of emails that all have something in common.
For example, if you have a series of emails from one organization, you can create a label with the organization's name and group all emails from that organization into one Label (folder). Then, you can easily access this "folder" of emails with one click without having to search your entire inbox. This tutorial shows you how to create Labels for your email.
1. Open your Gmail. Go to the left side menu and click More.
2. Scroll down the menu and click Create New Label at the very bottom.
3. In the box that appears, name your Label. For example, it can be Quizlet, 3rd Grade, etc. The Nest Label Under option is available if you want to file this Label (folder) within another Label (folder) that is already created. If you do not want to do this, leave the Nest Label Under box unchecked.
4. Click Create.
5. Your Label is now created. Now you want to group emails from the same sender together and place them under that Label. In our example, we want to group a particular set of emails under the Quizlet Label.
6. Open an email from a sender where you want every email from that sender to be placed under a particular Label (in our example, the Quizlet label). Just above the opened email, click the three dots (More).
7. Click Filter Messages Like This.
8. Fill in any information on the appropriate lines (Subject, Has the Words, etc.) if you only want to limit to certain emails from the sender that meet the criteria you want in this Label. If you do not want to apply any restrictions, simply leave the lines blank. Once you are done, click Create Filter.
9. Click Apply the Label. Then click the Choose Label drop menu.
10. Select the Label where you want all emails from this person to be placed.
11. Click Also Apply Filter to Matching Conversations. That way, any emails that you have received from this person will automatically be grouped under this Label along with all future emails from this sender.
12. Click Create Filter.
13. Now all emails from that sender will be grouped under your newly created label. Repeat this process for any other people you want to group under this Label.
14. For a final touch, you can change the color of the Label you have created. Using different colors for your Labels can help you distinguish them at a glance. By default, the Labels are colored gray. To change the Label's color, hover the mouse over the edge of the label until you see three vertical dots. Click the three vertical dots.
15. Hover the mouse over Label Color. From the color palette, select the color you want to add to that Label.
16. The Label is now the color you selected.
