Homework in SS
Homework is meant to practice or reinforce concepts learned in class, but is NOT typically assigned in social studies class. However, some students need additional time to work on class work. Reasons can vary but may include:
perfectionism
time management
interest
off task in class
Homework is often C.A.U.S.E.S. which means Complete Any Unfinished Schoolwork & Enthusiastically Study instead of a specific assignment.
A general rule of thumb: students should spend on average 70 minutes (10 min x grade level) a night total for all classes on homework. Some students may need to spend more and some less. However, you may not believe in homework at all. There are many opinions regarding homework.
Instructional Delivery
Classroom instruction is delivered using a blended learning model and incorporated inquiry based lessons. This means some lessons are delivered using what is familiarly known as traditional teaching practice of face to face and small group instruction. Some lessons are delivered using the Canvas learning management system, which enables students to work at the pace and level that best works for them. Collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity remain at the forefront of all instruction.
Late work
(not due to absence or extenuating circumstances)
Late work is defined as any work that was not turned in during the class period of the day and time it is collected. Late work can be submitted up to two weeks after the assignment due date.
Assignments submitted late will receive an 11% deduction, leaving students with the maximum potential grade of 89%.
Any work not submitted within two weeks of the original due date will remain a zero with no further opportunity to regain credit.
Please follow work submission procedures.
Missed Work
For absences of one to three days, the student will have one day for each day absent. For absences exceeding three days, the student may have two days for each day absent to make up work. If there is a need due to extenuating circumstances, please communicate with the teacher. There is no academic penalty for make-up work completed in the time frame stated above. All assignments are graded for full credit.
SEL / Advisory
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Students meet with their SEL Advisor on Mondays during the SMART block time.
