The Week of June 1...

Hello! We have made it to the end, and this is certainly not how I thought it would look. 😢 I have loved this class something fierce this year and am sad to end it this way! Instead of coming into the building you will be asked to remain in your vehicle and go through our carpool line. Staff will collect your student names and bring your belongings out to your car for contactless pickup. If you have end of year gifts for staff, classroom books, etc. please make sure that they are clearly labeled and the person delivering your bags will take it in for you. Thank you for understanding."

The week of August 19...

Important Dates to Remember:

  • Picture Day is tomorrow! We will get our pictures taken at 9:20. Students may bring a change of clothes to change into for PE and Recess if they would like.
  • Our poetry event is Auguest 30th at 12:30pm! We are so excited to invite you into our classroom.

EL: Students are working to turn their poet expertise into a literary essay! Students will draft their introduction, two proof paragraphs, and a conclusion, then peer edit and revise before writing the final essay. Lots of writing happening up in here!

Math: Students are working hard to complete multi-step word problems involving multiplicative comparison, area, and perimeter. Look for a review sheet later this week in preparation for our next assessment.

Homework: Read daily AND practice multiplication facts. The multiplication challenge continues this week with 3s.

The week of August 12...

Important dates to remember:

  • Open House Tuesday August 13 First Session: 6:00 - 6:40pm Second Session: 6:50- 7:30pm.
  • Picture Day is August 21.
  • Poetry Event August 30th at 12:30pm in our classroom, 403

EL: Today students picked a poet featured in Love That Dog to become an expert on! They will work over the next few days to research their poet so that they are able to write a literary essay about what inspired their poet. Students will draft, revise, and edit their essay over the coming weeks.

Math: Students will begin the second part of our multiplicative comparison unit which focuses on area and perimeter. Today we took a pre-test, I am excited to share the data with them later (after our post-test) and celebrate their growth!

Science: Magnestism continues to be our focus.

Homework: Read daily AND practice multiplication facts. (A letter went home about the multiplication challenge that we will begin this week. )

Assessments went home today in Monday folders. Please look over them with your child. A lot of students lost points on the Math assessment becuase they did not read the problem in its entirety and/or rushed through. I am trying to stress the importance of taking pride in our work, taking our time, and double checking it. Please reinforce this with your child at home! Also, please be reminded that this is not the final assessment on these standards and mastery is not expected at this time. We are working hard to grow (and have since our pre-test!) and there is still time for this to occur!

The week of August 5...

OPEN HOUSE will be on Tuesday August 13th. First Session: 6:00 - 6:40pm Second Session: 6:50- 7:30pm.

EL: Students have Finished reading Love that Dog and are now working to write informative paragraphs about what inspired the main character Jack to write poems. They will continue working on their own poems as well as digging deeper into what inspired famous poets to write poetry.

Math: Multiplicative comparison story problems. We are continuing to focus on reading the problem, reading it again, and then making sure we are answering ALL parts of the problem.

Science: Magnestism continues to be our focus in science as we dig deeper into temprary, permanet, and natural magnets.

Homework: Read daily for at least 20 minutes.

The week of July 29...

EL: This week we continue our study of Love that Dog and the various poems within. We have been focusing on the main character Jack and how he's changed throughout the story so far. Students have also been working hard to write some poetry of their own and will continue to do so this week. They are excited to share their poems with you in the future!

Math: We have just started a unit on multiplicative comparison. Students will work to solve one and two step word problems using multiplication and division. Often times the numbers within the problems aren't tricky, but the words are. We have been talking about how important it is to read and then reread the problem.

Science: We continue our study of magnetism this week. Students went on a magnetic scavenger hunt through the classroom and today they used magnets to navigate a paper clip through a maze!

Homework: Students should continue to read daily for at least 20 minutes. Graded assessments went home today in blue Monday folders. You may wish to go over these with your child. If your child received a 2 or below, not to worry, mastery is not expected on our first try, and we are working hard to grow! Should you have questions please reach out!

The week of July 22...

Hello! As I adjust to teaching a new grade level, and students adjust to a new school year, there will be some things that will require your patience and understanding. We are still figuring out what works best for us! I will do my best to keep you updated on what we are doing at school and what you can be doing at home to best support your child. Below summarizes what we have been doing for the past week and will do the remainder of this week.

EL: Together we have been reading "Love That Dog" by Sharon Creech. We will work with this novel throughout the first quarter. Within the book there are various poems mentioned and discussed by the main character, Jack. As we analyze how Jack feels in the book, we will also analyze these poems. Students will determine the theme of poems, discuss the structure and imagery within them as well as write an effective summary of the poems.

Math: Students have been working to represent and interpret data using line plots, scaled bar graphs, and frequency tables. Last week students created a survey and collected data from other classes using a frequency table and then turn that table into a bar graph. They did really well with this project! We will have our first math assessment tomorrow, and from there decide how to procede.

Science: We just started a unit on Magnetism and will continue to work on this for the next few weeks. More updates coming soon!

Homework: I have given a review sheet on graphing for students to complete tonight in preparation for their graphing assessment tomorrow. We will review this in the morning during arrival time. Aside from an occasional review sheet, students will not recieve regular homework. They will from time to time be asked to revisit assignments completed in class or complete unfinished work. Students should however be reading nightly, or listening to a family read aloud. No one is ever too old for a read aloud! :)
