Most elections like the House of Representatives or state School Superintendent are decided on by who gets the most votes during the election. This rule basically works for everything except for the President and Vice-President.
At polling locations or through mail-in ballots, Americans vote for the combined ticket of the president and vice president and each state tallies the votes. Instead of giving the win to the national vote winner, in 1787 the Continental Congress decided each state should have input. After the election, the state determines who got the most votes per state, and each state has a different amount of points depending on the population of the state. Smaller states have less votes. For example North Carolina has 15 while Florida has 29 and West Virginia has 5. In December, the official points are tallied up and the first candidate to get 270 points is the winner. This system is called the Electoral College.
However, in some people’s opinion, the way presidents are elected may seem unfair. For example, in the last election the candidate with the most votes (Hillary Clinton) lost because of the Electoral College. Another thing to think about is that there are exactly 11 states that will automatically get you to 270 points. Yes, it does mean you got a lot of the population, but possibly not the majority. Think about it this way, with almost every state the president received 50-70 percent of the vote. Which meant that there would still be about 50 to 30 percent of people who voted for the other person. If you were to add those people up to the other states they would probably have more people than the 11 states. Surely the Electoral College debate will be discussed before the next election, watch for it in the news.
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were the democratic candidates for this election and were declared the victors as well. Joe Biden’s background includes being Vice President for President Obama. As for Kamala Harris, she is a former Senator and now she is the first woman and minority to be declared Vice President.
Donald Trump and Mike Pence were the Republican candidates this year in the election. Donald Trump's background has been that he was President for the past four years. While Mike Pence's background is that he has been Vice President for the past four years and that he has served six terms in the House of Representatives.
The following won the other offices up for vote in North Carolina:
For the Senate Thom Tillis won. For Governor Roy Cooper won reelection. For the US House the following won G.K Butterfield, Debra Ross, Greg Murphy, Virginia Foxx, Kathy Manning, David Rouzer, Richard Hudson, Dan Bishop, Patrick Mchenry, Madison Cawthorn, Alma Adams, Ted Bud, and David Price.
Even though Joe Biden and Kamala Harris won the national popular and electoral college votes, Donald Trump and Mike Pence had the most votes in North Carolina. The most recent count was:
Donald J. Trump 2,757,112
Joseph R. Biden 2,683,787
As always, I would like to thank you for reading. Remember, in four years, some of our 8th graders will be able to vote, and we want to encourage everyone to register to vote and have their voice heard. Every vote matters!
