I am sure many of you have had both dark and milk chocolate and wonder what is the difference? What causes the unique taste of each chocolate? To answer those questions, I have conducted a survey and researched each type.
Dark Chocolate is known for its bitter taste and its darker color. This taste is due to the fact that dark chocolate has no milk or butter in it. Instead the chocolate is mostly made of cocoa solids and cocoa butter.
Cocoa solids and cocoa butter are the result when cocoa liquor (pure chocolate) is pressed after being roasted and fermented creating cocoa solids or cocoa butter
Most dark chocolate has a percentage to show how much of the chocolate is made up of. The average for dark chocolate is around 60% though sometimes it can be as high as 80% (when used in baking) or as low as around 40%!
Milk and butter were added when chocolate was introduced to Europe
This chocolate is definitely a lot sweeter than the bitter dark chocolate and it is a lighter color. Even though this chocolate is sweeter, it still contains the same cocoa solids and cocoa powders just a lot less of them.
Chocolate makers add milk and butter to make this chocolate sweet and creamy. Finally, they add more sugar to make it even sweeter.
This is the part we have all been waiting for... which is better?!? The milk chocolate won this poll with 54.5% of the vote while dark chocolate only got 45.5% of the votes. One 6th grader claimed that they liked milk chocolate better “...because of its sweet taste”. While on the other side of the poll 6th grader Summer states that “...the bitter taste adds a little more flavor”. Even though the majority of the vote went to milk chocolate. The dark chocolate is actually healthier than milk chocolate. This is due to the fact that milk chocolate has more sugar than dark chocolate but CNN states that all chocolate is “...actually helping your heart” This was discovered in a study from europe. It has also been discovered that chocolate helps with oxygen in take while working out and helps improve blood flow to the head, though there is one downside CNN states that “ ...recent study found a link to acne.” Even though chocolate is good for you in a lot of ways, it's still better if you only have it a few times a week.
