  • 1) We hope EVERYONE has a fantastic summer and we are looking forward to seeing you back in the building in the fall!

LOCKER CLEAN OUT INFORMATION!!!
Dear Parents and Students:

Attached is the link containing directions and the schedule for locker clean out. It is paramount that you read everything carefully and follow all directions. Only students will be permitted to enter the building,** and they must do so through the student services entrance (car pool entrance). A staff member will be there to check them in so we can monitor the number of students in the building at any given time. Students will have a certain pathway they must follow and will be required to maintain social distancing protocols. Once a student has retrieved all items, they will exit through the main doors located in front (see map embedded in the link). The whole process will require no more than 5-10 minutes per student. If you can not make the assigned time, please contact Mr. Evans (hevans@wcpss.net). He will work with you individually to schedule an alternative time for you to collect your belongs. Please note that we are encouraging all students to wear a mask while in the building.

** Parents who need to pick up medications from the office will be allowed to sign those out with Mrs. Zachrich during the assigned time their child is scheduled for locker clean out. Parents will need to report directly to the office. As with students, please be mindful of social distancing and consider wearing a mask while in the building.

Good afternoon and Happy Friday! Wanted to post a few updates and will continue to post on Fridays!

Greetings families! We hope this email finds you well. I am using the email function for a few purposes. 1) It allows me to reach more families and 2) it allows me to translate the document into the various languages our school serves. I have included core classes AND elective classes in this email so please check in with your student with these topics. Warning, this email is QUITE long, but I wanted to make sure you had all the information you needed.

Here is a copy of our schedule for students

Please make sure you are checking with the 6th grade website, teachers are updating this with work and will be a starting point for all resources. bit.ly/6rcmms

Just wanted to remind everyone that teachers cannot respond to students unless they are sending emails via their WCPSS.NET email address. Please be mindful of this policy when having students reach out to their teachers.

A note from Mrs. Mason:

I wish I could share some news in a different way, but I am left with little option. My family and I are relocating, back to our home state of Ohio, over the summer. I have truly enjoyed being your students’ counselor and advocate this year! Reedy Creek has been my family here in North Carolina, but boy are we excited to be closer to our family! I will forever look upon my 6 years with Reedy Creek as an amazing experience and will hope I have inspired your students to be the best they can be! I leave you in good hands!! Missing you already!

Notes from Your Social Worker:

· Families can dial 211 from their phone for access to community resources; This is a 24-hour hotline for resources and families are confidentially referred for services

· Food security- https://www.wcpss.net/food

o This link provides food access sites throughout Wake County and is open to all Wake County students and families

· Individual family needs outside of food- Families can dial 211 and/or those needs can be forwarded to me so that I can connect families to resources that are available. If I am unable to connect families to resources, there is a direct dept email address I can use for further assistance in meeting family needs

· Reminder: my work cell number is 919-623-6261, this is the number I use to communicate with families

The Friday Institute is hosting a reImagining Schools Student Video Contest. They want to hear from NC students about how they would redesign school for the upcoming school year based on their experience over the last couple months. What do they imagine--or reimagine--when they think about school? Visit their website for details. Video entry deadline is June 30, 2020.

Core Subjects:

English Language Arts: (McDermott, Elliott, Hawthorne):

It’s been a crazy year for our sixth graders, but we’re so proud of how they have all handled the challenges of our curriculum and circumstances. We’re focusing on reflection in our lessons next week so that students can see how far they’ve come this year as readers and writers! On Monday, students can take part in some online games to show off what they’ve learned in ELA. On Wednesday, students will be reflecting on this year and writing some goals for next year, as well as giving our incoming sixth graders some advice! As a final note, we do need all ELA novels back for next year’s sixth graders. If you missed locker clean out or find any missing texts over the summer, please feel free to return them to the main office. We hope you have a fabulous summer, and we look forward to seeing all of our sixth graders as seventh graders next year!

Math: (Mr.Cabral, Ms. Diamond, Ms. Fetner, & Ms. Gregory)

The final week of this crazy school year has arrived. Thanks for all your hard work this year and especially during the remote learning. This week we will wrap up the Data & Distribution unit with learning about quartiles and box plots. This is not something that students were exposed to in elementary school. Thursday, there will be a Quizizz for students to show what they’ve learned during the unit.

We hope you all have a great summer. For those who will be returning to Reedy Creek, we look forward to seeing you again. For those who will not, we will miss you and regret that we couldn’t say good-bye in person.

Ms. Gregory:

Students completed the Unit 13 test, Tuesday. We reviewed exponential properties, Thursday. We will complete a end-of-year review next week. Please continue to encourage your student to complete daily activities. I am always available through email if students are struggling with the material.

Intro: We are working on the Amphibian/Reptile unit. Assignments for this week are posted on Google Classroom and are due on May 26th. We will have a Google Meet on May 26th from 10:30 – 11:00am.

I am also missing exploring outside and identifying animals with my students, so I am using my backyard to help with that! I am challenging my students to identify the 4 species I have found in my yard; this assignment can be found on Google Classroom. They should use herpsofnc.org to help them with the identification process!

They are also encouraged to go outside and identify whatever animals they see 😊

AIG Information from Mrs. James for our AIG students

AIG Information from Mrs. James

Hello AIG Families! It has been great engaging with some of the AIG students through the Google Classroom Enrichment pages! If your student hasn't completed any enrichment activities, he or she can start at any point. Students can choose the topics that pique their interests and complete the activities for those topics.

In the AIG ELA Google Classroom, a story, poem, or article is posted each week. The texts come from CommonLit and students vote to decide the topic for the week. Reading comprehension questions are included, so students can monitor their understanding. Extension activities are also provided. Each Monday afternoon, there is an optional Google Meet Socratic Seminar where we discuss the text as a group. So far we have read Ray Bradbury, discussed the pros and cons of terraforming Mars, and had Mrs. Thrash, our Media Specialist, join us for a study of dystopian literature.

In the AIG Math Google Classroom, MATHCOUNTS Mini Lessons are posted. These optional challenges include a video and activity sheet. Answers are posted so students can check their work. There will also be links to math puzzles, brainteasers, and logic problems.

If you have questions, please contact Karla James at kjames@wcpss.net.

FTC Robotics Coding Course and 3-D Printing Tutorial:

Online Courses

As part of our preparation and training for next season the FTC Coaches have been working on creating online courses. We have a list of skills we want to expose ALL of the kids on the team to regardless of their interests. These first 2 skills are Programming in Java and 3D Design Using OnShape. The goal of both of these courses is to introduce the kids to the basics of the Java Language and 3D Design. There are plans underway to build a Part 2 of the Programming Course that will focus specifically on FTC and moving the robot (we just have to figure out how to test virtually).

Any students that wish to be on the team next year must work through these courses. It should not be a significant time investment. We recommend, especially for the programming course, to do one section each day.

Need Help??

Questions for the courses can be posted to the Google Groups Forum: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/reedy-creek-ftc. Either a coach or current team member will reply and attempt to help. You will have to request permission to join before posting.

The FTC Coaches will host an open office hours Webex next week - Wed Apr 8 from 7-8 pm. Parents and kids can join the webex without creating an account by following this link:https://meetingsamer9.webex.com/meetingsamer9/j.php?MTID=m3deb9424eaa82321f52a2bcab58039be
