Reading will be entirely new this year for 5th grade. The county adopted a new reading program that I'll refer to as EL from here on out. The curriculum is split into four main modules (one for each quarter) and we'll be highlighting a variety of skills throughout each unit. This will also be where a large amount of our Social Studies ties in.
Each day they will have an hour of direct instruction from me (EL) and an hour where they work their way through three different 20 minute activities (All Block); working with me, independent reading and an independent activity. We will be sharing more about this as we progress through our first unit, but we are all excited to try out this new program and learn as we go!
We will be reading "Esperanza Rising" for Module 1. The break down of Module 1 is as follows:
Unit 1: Building Background Knowledge of Human Rights
Unit 2: Writing to Inform: Threats to Human Rights in "Esperanza Rising"
Unit 3: Using Writing to Raise Awareness: Human Rights
