Conscious Discipline
Poe is a Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) school that chooses to implement this approach through the program of Conscious Discipline. Conscious Discipline is a comprehensive self-regulation approach that integrates social learning with discipline. Adults teach and model expectations. Students learn to handle their own emotions and regulate their behavior. Students will utilize the classroom “Safe Place” to regain composure and learn to self-regulate.
Our school conflict tool is the TIME MACHINE, a communication method that allows students to work together to state what is offensive and define new behaviors from the offender. When a more serious conflict arises, the school counselor may be contacted. If necessary, a behavior referral will be submitted to an administrator. A parent/guardian will be contacted when a referral is issued.
For minor incidents, teachers will contact the parent/guardian. For major incidents, a teacher will contact the parent/guardian and submit a Major referral to administration. An administrator will contact the student’s parent/guardian when a Major referral is issued.
