✏️ Classroom Assessments
Students take a range of formative and summative assessments throughout third grade. These assessments are given regularly and provide students, teachers and families with an insight into their child's current achievements and goals.
🏠 Classroom assessments will be graded and sent home regularly in your child's purple folder.
✍️ ELA
Here is an overview of third grade ELA assessment structure. Students usually complete one unit every three weeks.
🔢 Math
Students will take at least one summative assessment per math unit. Formative exit tickets may also be given as a quick review/check in on particular standards to support student understanding.
🔎 Science / 🌎 Social Studies
Students will take either formative exit tickets or summative assessments for each unit to assess their understanding.
✔️ Grading Classroom Assessments
At Parkside Elementary, we use Standards Based Grading.
Each assessment will be graded with an attached rubric. Each rubric will provide students, teachers and grown-ups with the assessed standard and a number grade.
Students will receive a number grade of 1-4. Please read the infographic to the left for an insight into what each number grade represents.
📖 mClass
This is a series of short reading assessment based on phonic knowledge, fluency and vocabulary. Students will take this assessment three times a year. Part 1 will be administered by the homeroom teacher 1:1 and Part 2 will be administered independently online.
Once all assessments are complete, families will receive detailed reports and ways to support their child at home.
🔢 STAR Math
This is an online informative assessment that covers all mathematical concepts and adapts to their current level to provide teachers with data and resources to support your child. Students will take this assessment three times a year.
📈 Progress
Both mClass and STAR math may be given more regularly to students needing extra support and intervention. This will be communicated with families prior and will provide all with an insight into individual progress in a particular area.
💻 Beginning of Grade Tests (BOGs)
As your child begins third grade, you will see a concentrated focus in ensuring students can read at or above grade level and are making progress in reading proficiency. The goal is to ensure all third grade students can read, comprehend, integrate, and apply complex texts needed for secondary education and career success. As part of the Read to Achieve law (G.S. §115C-83.1) passed by the General Assembly in 2012, your child will take the Beginning-of-Grade 3 (BOG3) Reading Test to establish a baseline measure of beginning third-grade reading skills.
The majority of beginning third-grade students are not expected to demonstrate third-grade reading proficiency (score an achievement level 3, 4, or 5) on the BOG3 Test because they have not yet received third-grade reading instruction. Following the BOG3 Test administration, you will receive an individual student report with your child's score.
📆 BOG Administration Dates 2024/25

💻 NC Check-ins
Throughout Third Grade, students will take three rounds of NC Check-ins for both Reading and Math. The NC Check-Ins and NC Check-Ins 2.0 are formative interims developed by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s Annual Testing Program and are aligned to North Carolina grade-level content standards. The main purpose of the interims is to provide students, teachers, and parents or guardians with immediate in-depth data and a reliable estimate of students’ current performance on selected subsets of content standards. The end-of-grade (EOG) tests share a common question bank with the NC Check-Ins and NC Check-Ins 2.0, which then exposes students to similar question types and rigor found on the EOGs.
📆 NC Check-In Administration Dates 2023/24
Testing dates will be communicated by your child's homeroom teacher. NC Check-ins will be administered on student chromebooks. Please be sure to send students with fully charged chromebooks on these dates!
CogAT / IOWA
ALL Third Grade students participate in the CogAT at the beginning of the year. These assessments help towards identifying students who may receive AIG services. This is a national normed test administered to measure reasoning skills, not measured by traditional math and reading assessments.
If students are proficient in the CogAT, they will go on to take the IOWA before determining if they are eligible for services.
