Reading

If you child has reading fluency or comprehension goals, we will be using a variety of methods and tools to build their reading fluency and comprehension.

  • Most students will work on some sort of listening comprehension. We do this using a variety of apps such as Reading A-Z, Epic books, and Big Universe. Your student can access all of these sites and apps from home as well.

  • When students are working on reading fluency, we will use many different passages on their current reading level to practice orally reading the text to get comfortable with decoding.

  • When students are working on reading comprehension, we will use a variety of fiction and nonfiction text. We will engage with the text by discussing and building our background knowledge of the topic, reading for understanding, and answering higher order thinking questions about the text. Resources for these questions can be found below. If you child has reading comprehension goals, we will working on building their comprehension skills through games, discussions, and the Making Connections curriculum.

How can I help my child with reading?

  • Read to or listen to your child read daily for at least 20 minutes.

  • Ask your child questions at the end of every few pages. A good place to start are the -Wh questions: who? what? when? where? why? how?

  • Play reading games with your child.

  • To build vocabulary, play word games in the car. For example, you can ask them to point out everything that starts with the same sound OR find rhyming things.
