Catch-Up Day

Interims were sent home Monday, 10/1. Any missing work and/or corrections must be turned in by Monday, October 8th. There is no excuse for student to be missing assignments however students in all three ELA classes have struggled with the concept of how culture, time or place influence identity. We are continuing to work on this very complex concept.

Last Tuesday, 9/25 students were provided:

  • This Google doc of all work including pages and if it should have been turned in.
  • A list of missing assignments
  • Time to find/complete missing work

  • The Mid-Unit Assessment is now on Monday. The Chpt 4 charts show great improvement but several of you are still a bit confused on what makes identity.
  • Chapter 4's gathering evidence chart will be graded as an minor assessment grade so be sure that is turned in on time Thursday!
  • Thursday's SmartBlock is open for any 7th grader who wants help with how culture, time or place influence identity or any other LA work.

Work: By this time you should have WB p 3 for chapters 1-5 (5 1st read), WB 12-13 (Chpt 3) and first read of "Time Trip: Sudan's Civil War" with unknown words/phrases highlighted and gist written. All of your WB pages should be complete except for p 2, 10, 12, 14 depending on how you did your notes for that chapter.

Want to get ahead? Complete WB p 18 (Chpt 4) and then complete a 1st read of Chpt 5 including finding unknown words and writing the gist. Please do NOT do p 19 as this is the most misunderstood concept and the focus of the review session.

Mid-Unit Assessment:

  • Materials: You will be able to use your novel, workbook and any of your own notes to help you.
  • Learning Targets: You will cite evidence to support your analysis of Nya's and Salva's character and your analysis of how the author develops and contrasts the points of view of Nya and Salva.
  • Review: I have gone over your Gathering Evidence Graphic Organizer for Chpt 4. You will be given this back along with the same rubric for our assessment. We will work together to fix any errors before it is graded as a minor assessment.
  • Date: We will have two lessons and then the assessment.
  • Corrections: Major Assessment corrections will be worth 1/2 credit. This is a major assessment grade.

ELA Curriculum Plan for Wake 7th Grade

Module 1

Unit 1: Perspectives in Southern Sudan

Big Ideas and Guiding Questions

  • Individual survival in challenging environments requires both physical and emotional resources.
  • Authors of fiction both draw on and elaborate on historical facts in order to convey their ideas about what it was like to be alive during that time.
  • How do individuals survive in challenging environments?
  • How do culture, time, and place influence the development of identity?
  • How does reading from different texts about the same topic build our understanding?
  • How does juxtaposing multiple characters help an author develop and contrast their points of view?
