Welcome to First Grade!

What will my child learn in first grade?

Letterland

Letterland is a unique, phonics-based approach to teaching reading, writing and spelling to 3-8 year olds. The Letterland characters transform plain black letter shapes into child-friendly pictograms and they all live in an imaginary place called Letterland.

Simple stories about the Letterland characters, explain the full range of dry phonics facts so that children are motivated to listen, to think and to learn. These stories explain letter sounds & shapes, allowing children to progress quickly to word building, reading and writing.

Your child began learning all about Letterland in Kindergarten and will continue to use Letterland in first and second grade.

Math

Big Ideas for the first quarter:

• Represent and interpret data.

• Extend the counting sequence.

• Understand place value.

• Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.

• Work with addition and subtraction equations.

Language Comprehension

For the first quarter, our big idea will be, "Building our Classroom Community."

Students will engage in learning and discussion through interactive read aloud and integrated speaking/language/writing experiences to learn about habits of character which lead to a classroom culture built for learning.

Students will also work on communication and collaboration skills during our classroom discussions about the book we are reading.

Mostly, we hope to create a love of reading!

Social Studies and Science

In the first quarter, we will focus on these big ideas:

Social Studies: Understand how people engage with and participate in the community.

Science: Understand how forces (pushes or pulls) affect the motion of an object.
