This unit will focus on beginning multiplication and division concepts. In third grade students are formally introduced to multiplication as an operation as they interact with real world story problems. To help students understand the concepts of multiplication and division, they will learn different strategies, including equal groups, skip counting, repeated addition, arrays, and the Commutative Property of Multiplication. Through discussions about multiplication and division, students will gain a better understanding of place value and the base ten system.
Students will be able to:
Write a multiplication equation to represent story problems
Use pictures, arrays, equal groups, and repeated addition to model story problems
Identify patterns of multiplication.
Multiplication symbol (x) means “groups of”
4 x 2 means 4 groups of 2

3rd Grade Unit 5 Parent Letter: Reasoning with Shapes & their Attributes.docxThis unit will focus on building an understanding of area and perimeter using attributes of rectangles and squares and relationships between addition, multiplication, and area. We will use various methods to determine the amount of space inside a two-dimensional shape (measured in square units,) and learn how to determine the distance around a polygon. Memorizing the formulas for area and perimeter is NOT the focus of this unit, but many students will discover them as we work.
Students will be able to:
Find the area of a rectangle by tiling without gaps or overlaps
Multiply side lengths to determine the area of rectangles when problem solving
Illustrate and explain that the area of a rectangle can be determined by partitioning
Use the sum of two smaller rectangles to find the area of a larger rectangle
Find the unknown side lengths given the perimeter of the polygon

Then we learn to multiply 3 digit by 2 digit whole numbers using a variety of strategies. Finally we will learn how to divide 4 digit whole numbers by 2 digit divisors.
