Group 1
With that he looked me straight in the eye
And said with a sad sigh
If you continue on, we’ll all die
The trees won’t grow back
As fast as you whack
The species are gone
You can’t carry on
So put the axe down
And give the trees some time
For the earth will be better
For yours and for mine
Group 2
Stop cutting down trees because it makes me cry.
He said "I am the Gaurdbark, the ward of the trees-
And I don't like the way you are managing these.
"Cutting them down makes the earth grow hotter,
and then comes down all the rainwater."(flooding)
"Cutting down the forest is mean
Because these trees keep our air clean."
Because of what you are doing the animals must leave
You are making me sad so I must grieve.
Group 3
With that, he looked me straight in the eye
“You people don’t understand, you don’t even try!
If you really want your son to see the trees
Stop cutting them down, I’m begging you, please!”
“Unfortunately, sir, I cannot do that”
And with my last sentence, he took up an ax.
“I am guardbark, protector of trees
And if you won’t stop chopping them down, then god help you please”
Off went my left leg, and off went my right
I guess he had a point, I couldn’t even fight
“I’ve taken your legs, as compensation for your deeds
Just remember this isn’t as close to what the ecosystem needs
These wounds won’t kill you, at least not yet
As long as you bandage them and get some rest
What I’ve done to you represents only a fraction of what you’ve done
So remember when you’re chopping down trees and having fun
That the trees are fragile and have feelings that they feel
And together, with work, we can all begin to heal
Guardbark left, and I began to cry
I had been wrong about the trees and then I died.
I was dead with the many trees whose lives I had taken
If only this entire time, my ideals hadn’t been mistaken
I could have done better, maybe even saved some trees
But now I will decompose into the ground, and become nourishment for some peas.
Group 6
With that, he looked at me straight in the eye….
He frowned, and he thought, and he said in reply,
“These trees that you want, for your own little boy,
They won’t be here for long, for him to enjoy.
If you keep cutting these trees, and when all is done,
The land will suffer, in more ways than one.
The birds will despair
With this smog in their air
And the bears will mourn so
For it is far they must go
To find new land for their old fashioned needs
Because what you are doing is erasing these trees.
And though you say that you replenish with ease
This land you deplete cannot match your high speed.
There are so many so many things you can’t see
That suffer and whither without hope of new seed.
So I say to you this with one last demand,
Stop cutting these trees and stop destroying this land.
For there is only so much that this earth can withstand.”
Group 4
“Why, Tree-Hacker? Why would you lie?
There’s a little something called DEFORESTATION.
Caused by all of your corporations
in your reckless pursuit guided only by greed.
How much wood do you really need?
Each tree you cut down comes with consequence.
Destruction of habitats is quite immense.
Sure, generalist species can find a new gem,
But what about specialists? What about them?
It’s actions like these which I have to condemn.
You’re all chopping down nature’s stem.”
With that, the Guardbark took to the sky.
I felt we weren’t finished, him and I,
As I would continue to let trees die.
I thought he was forced to be content.
There was no way he could possibly prevent
This large-scale company harvesting of wood.
So I reached for my axe right where it stood.
But then I realized, maybe he could…
My hands grasped nothing but the cold, thin air.
My tool of DEFORESTATION was no longer there.
Group 5
With that, he looked me right in the eye,
“I like that you wood hackers decided to try.”
Mr. Guardbark patted a nearby tree.
He looked satisfied, but still sad, to me.
“These forests and reserves seem quite secure.
Perhaps through sustainability they’ll have a future.
It doesn’t seem likely you wood hackers will stop,
But I’ll take selective over clearcutting-too over the top.
The fires too, let them rest,
Since natural reduction of biomatter is best.”
I watched then with surprise and pride,
As the guardian of trees left with joy in his stride.
