In 1st Grade, we administer the Number Knowledge Test (NKT) at up to 3 points during the school year. The NKT is designed to measure a student's number sense, which helps children make sense of mathematical problems. Research has shown that the knowledge assessed by the NKT is essential for successful learning of arithmetic in school and is foundational for higher mathematics learning. We use the information we learn about a student during the NKT for instructional planning.
Students who demonstrate a need for support with number sense are provided interventions to support their development of these foundational skills and their progress is monitored carefully.
