You may find yourself in a situation where sound is not playing through the speakers of your device or through headphones when they are plugged in.
The following are some steps to try to solve this issue.
Plugging in headphones and headsets into staff laptops
It is important to distinguish between headphones and headsets.
Headsets will have a microphone so they can function as both audio input and output devices.
Headphones do not have microphones and therefore only function as audio output devices.
When plugging in headphones or a headset on a staff laptop (Acer Spin 5 Laptops), a box will appear asking you what type of device you are connecting. It is important you select the appropriate option for your device.
Other devices such as desktop computers may not prompt with the same box. In some cases they will automatically switch to the device you have just plugged in.
If you have plugged in headphones or a headset and find that the sound continues to come out of the device's speakers or is not coming out at all, see the instructions below.
Switching Audio output devices
In a situation where sound is not coming through your desired audio device:
Ensure the audio device is physically connected (or connected via BlueTooth) to the main device.
Select the speaker icon in the bottom right corner of your screen. Your currently selected audio device will be displayed here.
If available, select the upward facing arrow on the right hand side. This will bring up a list of available audio devices.
Select the option that matches the audio device you want to use. If you are unsure which option is correct, you can test them individually be selecting them one by one and playing audio each time to see if it comes out of your desired device.
Switching to Projector Audio
When plugging into a projector via an HDMI cable, you may need to switch to the projector audio device.
Ensure the HDMI cable is plugged into your laptop.
Ensure the projector is switched on and any connected speakers are also switched on.
Select the speaker icon in the bottom right corner of your screen.
Select the upward facing arrow on the right hand side. You should see a device listed for the projector. In this example, it is called "EPSON PJ".
Select this option.
If your camera is not working in teams, a few things you can check are:
Does your laptop have a physical privacy screen/shutter for your camera? The HP Staff laptops come with a built in privacy slider that can cover the camera. The slider may be covering your camera.
To open the privacy slider, slide your finger from right to left, on the top of the screen as shown in the image.
Privacy slider open
Privacy slider closed
In teams, ensure you have selected the correct camera in "devices" under "settings". To view your settings, click on your circular profile icon in the top right corner of teams and then select "settings". Then select "devices" and look for the "camera" setting. Check here to make sure you have the right camera selected. If you are using a staff HP laptop, ensure you have selected "HP HD Camera" and not "HP 5MP Camera".
Ensure you have the correct Windows Privacy settings. To check this, type 'Settings' and press enter in the Windows search bar. Then select "Privacy" from the list of options and then under "App permissions" select "Camera". Check that your settings match the ones in the following screenshot. The same applies for "Microphone" which can also be found under "App permissions".
