When using dual monitors you have some choice as to how you would like them used.
You can:
use only your main screen
use only your second screen
duplicate your screen or
extend your working screen.
In windows these are called projection modes

When you connect your staff portable device, and it's existing screen, to an external monitor or projector you will be able to choose how you would like to use the extra screen space.
In order to choose the projection mode you would like to use press <Win>+<P>.
After pressing the keyboard combination you will be shown this menu.
If you just want to use your laptop screen choose "PC screen only"
To show the same objects on both screens choose "Duplicate"
To get extra screen working area choose "Extend". You are then able to display different windows or programs on each screen. This also allows you to show a video or content on a classroom projector whilst having different content open on your notebook screen
To only use the external monitor choose "Second screen only"
<Win>+<P> brings up the menu to choose your projection mode
Once you have setup your dual monitors with "Extend" as the projection mode you are able to move applications between your screens using keyboard shortcuts.
<Win>+<Shift>+<Right Arrow> will move the active window to the right screen
<Win>+<Shift>+<Left Arrow> will move the active window to the left screen
<ALT>+<TAB> will allow you to switch between active windows on your desktop
<CTRL>+<TAB> switches between tabs in the Chrome browser
