On October 3rd of this year, renowned singer and songwriter, Taylor Swift released her album: The Life of a Showgirl. It is her 12th album and also contains 12 tracks that contain vibrant and upbeat rhythms, contrasting the deep and heavy feel of her recent album, The Tortured Poets Department. The title track for the album also features another famous celebrity singer, Sabrina Carpenter. She was ultimately inspired to write it through her relationship with football player Travis Kelce and tells a story about her finding love through the times of difficulty regarding her popularity after her Eras Tour. Through its initial release to now, it has gained massive popularity throughout both her dedicated fanbase and outsiders to it that would like to know more about her music. The album has sparked the interest of many throughout the world while also sparking some debate amongst people. But how much of an impact has this album truly laid down?
The Life of a Showgirl is about Swift’s own personal struggles dealing with her fame and how it goes against the general view of popularity. This can mostly be seen in the title track, “The Life of a Showgirl,” which is a fictional narrative between a fictional idol, being a celebrity and showgirl named Kitty (with her vocal part being done by Sabrina Carpenter), and Swift’s own character who is a younger person aspiring to be like their idol. It goes on with Kitty warning her admirer about the reality of fame and how it isn’t just what it seems to be. However, she decides to pursue her dreams regardless of the warnings she had been given. The track even plays the sound of the crowd from her very famous Eras tour near the end, further exemplifying themes of fame and popularity. The overall mood conveyed through the lyrics of each song contrasts the song itself to reflect against what it's like to be a celebrity from the public eye.
Ironically enough, the album has received widespread international acclaim. In its first week alone, it reached over 460 million streams (on Spotify) in the U.S. and over 1.5 billion worldwide! Even on its first day it reached over 250 million, making it the second largest debut album on the platform alongside her other albums. For its physical releases, it sold 1.76 CDs and 1.334 million vinyl records totalling to 3.48 million sales (including digital). It also reached the top 1 album in the Billboard 200 with all 12 tracks being in the top of the Billboard Hot 100 (singles) with “Fate of Ophelia” being at the top. The top single, “Fate of Ophelia,” was also the most streamed song on Spotify and broke the record for the most streamed song on its first day. It is estimated that Swift has earned over 135 million dollars from her record-breaking album.
With all this fame, there is always surely criticism against the majority. While many say the songs are fun and catchy, some critics have claimed that it feels dull, predictable, and not as compelling as past works. Many people of the public have criticisms against it too, saying that the album’s contents and marketing are controversial and have received backlash. Despite all of this, it still remains one of the most popular albums of the modern era of music and Taylor Swift will stay as one of the most popular artists of all time. The underlying irony lying in the album and its own message show what is happening to it currently. It’s getting its fair share of fame and criticism, leading to possible unseen struggles that the general public will never know about. Overall reception of the album is up to interpretation, but it has left a lasting impression on Swift’s career and modern music.
