NGĀ REO - LANGUAGES

Ko tōu reo, ko tōku reo, te tuakiri tangata. Tīhei uriuri, tīhei nakonako.

Learning a new language provides a means of communicating with people from another culture and exploring one’s own personal world. Languages are inseparably linked to the social and cultural contexts in which they are used. Languages and cultures play a key role in developing our personal, group, national, and human identities. Every language has its own ways of expressing meanings; each has intrinsic value and special significance for its users. - New Zealand Curriculum

WHY STUDY french AT YEAR 9?

French is one of the few languages spoken on every continent. France is the number one tourist destination for international tourists. Everyone has heard about French Cuisine, French football and French rugby - so why not give it a try!

In Years 9&10 students complete "Mon Passeport pour le français". This course covers a range of destinations (topics) which allow you to get a solid foundation in French. The main language focus is on communicating in French and every effort will be made to speak as much French in the classroom as possible. In class we will do a range of activities and games to learn and practise the language. There are a variety of activities so students can choose how they learn.  Students will be using their device to record videos, for research and for written portfolio submissions. Students are also expected to use resources on the school website.

What will I learn?

You will focus on understanding and using familiar expressions and everyday vocabulary and  will interact in a simple way in supported situations.

You will learn to introduce yourself  and talk about your family, your hobbies and your school in a different language.

You will also learn a lot about a different culture and this will help you reflect on your own culture too.

What WILL I DO?

We cover a number of topics during the Year 9 course. You will speak a lot in French and learn lots of new words. You will do lots of language activities and games too.

3. Destination Mon collège:  You will learn to talk about your school subjects, giving opinions and reasons, describing your timetable, describing your school day, talking about food, schools in other French speaking countries.

4. Destination Mes Loisirs: You will learn to talk about what you do in your free time.

wHAT will I NEED?

You will need an open mind, a willingness to have a go and a positive attitude. Learning a language takes time and you might get frustrated, but that's part of the learning process!

You will also need a book, a pen and a device!

How is this course assessed?

Assessment

There are lots of opportunities to show off what you have learned. There are also two formal assessments at the end of the course. One is a spoken presentation that you record at home, the other is an interaction (chat) with someone else in the class.

Assessment in the Junior School

The Junior Assessment Framework (JAF) is used to assess all students in Years 9 & 10.  It is designed to measure and develop students’ thinking skills.  It is based on SOLO taxonomy and has strong links to the NZ Curriculum levels.  See the documents linked here for more information – one explains the JAF in a basic way and the other is the framework itself, which shows how the different levels of thinking are graded.

We hope you have a successful and interesting year.
