Kaua e rangiruatia te hāpai o te hoe; e kore tō tātou waka e ū ki uta.
Technology is intervention by design. It uses intellectual and practical resources to create technological outcomes, which expand human possibilities by addressing needs and realising opportunities. Effective and ethical design respects the unique relationship that New Zealanders have with their physical environment and embraces the significance of Māori culture and world views in its practice and innovation. - New Zealand Curriculum

This course provides the opportunity for you to work with the community, industry and tertiary sectors to facilitate technological practice. Successful collaboration with clients and associated stakeholders will involve problem solving, client satisfaction and outcomes in both 2 and 3 dimensional forms. Technology is never static. It is influenced by and in turn impacts on the cultural, ethical, environmental, political and economic conditions of the day.
Technology can open the door to degree courses with a design focus or engineering or to the hands on trade courses. The skills to problem-solve and think independently about wider issues other than the individual is a skill that can only grow the individual.
This is a practical workshop based course. You will build on the skills learnt in Year 12 Technology and work with increased independence. You will focus on quality control and considering fitness for purpose in the broadest sense.
You will be expected to work alongside a client while designing your product and will be required to gain continuous feedback from the stakeholders throughout the project. You will produce a portfolio that documents the processes including research, designing, manufacture and evaluation.
The course content, based on 3 internal achievement standards involves:
learning how to design for, use and operate a CNC machine
working with a range of hard materials
construction / joining techniques
learning the Technological Process, including how to deal with stakeholders and a diverse range of ideas
Students whom have successfully completed the Year 12 course will placed to do well in this course. We welcome new students to Materials Technology provided you have a genuine interest in the course and you are considering a related pathway when you leave school.
There is a cost component of $75 to provide materials and sundries for the building of the project. You will be able to take your project home at the end of the year.
An A4 visual diary is recommended for design work. You will also need to bring your BYOD device to each lesson.
It is advised that you choose either Materials Technology or Construction (not both). Choosing a second option from the remaining available Technology courses will compliment the learning in this course. Other available options are; Design & Visual Communication, Digital Technology Media and Digital Technology Science.
This course is assessed using a mixture of 3 internally assessed standards. Your physical project as well as your portfolio documenting your processes will form the assessment evidence.
