Kaua e rangiruatia te hāpai o te hoe; e kore tō tātou waka e ū ki uta.
Technology is intervention by design. It uses intellectual and practical resources to create technological outcomes, which expand human possibilities by addressing needs and realising opportunities. Effective and ethical design respects the unique relationship that New Zealanders have with their physical environment and embraces the significance of Māori culture and world views in its practice and innovation. - New Zealand Curriculum

Fashion and Design is an area of learning within the New Zealand Curriculum, where students learn about design, develop their practice of designing, and develop their design thinking in the context of fashion and textiles. Design, designing and design thinking is explored and expressed through manufactured textile products.
This is a practical based course, where you will develop skills in textiles manufacture in order to apply them to your own designed project(s). You will be expected to work alongside a client while designing the products. You will be required to gain continuous feedback from the stakeholders throughout the project. You will produce a portfolio that documents the processes including research, designing, manufacture and evaluation.
The course content, based on 3 achievement standards involves:
working with a range of soft materials
construction / joining techniques
learning the Technological Process, including how to deal with stakeholders and a diverse range of ideas
basic presentation and drawing skills
You will:
Develop a conceptual design for an outcome
Implement advanced procedures using textile materials to make a specified product with special features
Undertake effective development to make and trial a prototype.
Any student is welcome to take Fashion and Design, provided you have a genuine interest in the course and you are considering a related pathway when you leave school. Students whom have studied Fashion and Design, DVC or Materials Technology at Year 12 will be well placed to build on existing knowledge in this course.
There is a cost component of $85 to provide materials and sundries for the construction of the projects. You will be able to take your project home at the end of the year.
An A4 visual diary is recommended for design work. You will also need to bring your BYOD device to each lesson.
Choosing a second option from the remaining available Technology courses will compliment the learning in this course. Other available options are; Design & Visual Communication, Digital Technologies and Materials Technology.
This course is assessed using a mixture of 3 internally assessed standards. Your physical project as well as your portfolio documenting your processes will form the assessment evidence.
