English is the study, use, and enjoyment of the English language and its literature, communicated orally, visually, and in writing, for a range of purposes and audiences and in a variety of text forms. Learning English encompasses learning the language, learning through the language, and learning about the language. Students who are new learners of English or coming into an English-medium environment for the first time need explicit and extensive teaching of English vocabulary, word forms, sentence and text structures, and language uses. - New Zealand Curriculum

You should pick this subject if English is not your first language. This is an optional language-support class. Your English should be ranging from Basic to Intermediate Level. These classes are for you if you require a level of support with your academic English. It will help you to develop the understanding, grammar, and vocabulary needed to participate fully in an English learning environment and beyond. 13ELL will also enable you to achieve Level 3 credits.
The four main areas of learning for the year are:
speaking
listening
reading
writing
You will work to improve your skills in all of the above areas. You will also learn valuable skills like time management, editing work and computer processing during assessment conditions. All lessons will be in an immersive English environment so you will get many chances to practise your English skills.
In this course you will complete a range of internally assessed English Unit Standards. You will:
Read and write a recount
Read and write a practical purpose text
Listen to instructions
Participate in a group discussion
This course is recommended for students who are learning English as a second language or who have a non-English speaking background. You will need to be ready to learn a lot of grammar, vocabulary and revise new words every night. You will also need to be comfortable making mistakes and taking risks - that's how you learn a new language.
As this course is internally assessed, you should be ready to work hard during the year and be comfortable working towards strict deadlines and checkpoints.
You will study and be assessed against English Language Unit Standards at Level 3. 13ELL offers up to 25 credits for ESOL students. This is in recognition you are studying English Language and other subjects in a foreign language. You will do internal assessments throughout the year. There are no external assessments for this course.
