In Business Studies, you will develop your understanding of business theory and practices in a range of relevant contexts, through experiential (i.e. actually doing), as well as theoretical approaches to learning. This is achieved by gaining knowledge, skills and understanding in enterprise, sustainability, citizenship and globalisation.
The course covers business themes like business formation, idea genration, selling skills, functions and people in business, management and business environment. Learning objectives are explored within the context of New Zealand businesses with global focus.
Credits, cash and competition are on offer. You will run your own real life business.
You will be enrolled in the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) run by the Young Enterprise Trust to complete the internal standards of this course. This is a competition that aims to create entrepreneurs of the future in NZ. As Business students you will have the opportunity to come up with a viable business proposition by setting up a YES company, create real product or service, compile and implement a business plan, make real profit or loss (that you keep) and evaluate your actual versus planned outcomes.
While you will still engage in research and written work, the course demands high participation rates, strong organizational skills and a commitment to actively being involved in the business operations.
This course is recommended for students that are proactive, independent, curious, willing to put in work outside of usual classtime and work well in a group.
In this course, you will need to be prepared to make presentation to a panel of judges from the business community, enjoy researching and draw conclusions to then come up with a strategic business plan, be willing to participate actively in a collaborative working environment by seeking help when unsure, managing challenges and effectively communicating at all times.
Recommended prior learning includes having taken Level 1 Commerce or Level 2 Business. Having experienced success in Business will be a solid foundation for success in this course. If you are unsure or have yet to meet the prior learning recommendations or expectations the course, the HoD will meet with you to discuss your plans and ensure you have selected a pathway that meets your needs.
You will sit three achievement standards as follows:
3.3 External (4 credits)- Apply business knowledge to address a complex problem(s) in a given global business context.
3.4 Internal (6 credits)- Develop a marketing plan for a new or existing product.
3.6 Internal (9 credits)- Carry out, with consultation, an innovative and sustainable business.
Business Studies involves a high degree of written work and all internal standards are carried out in a group setting. You should be confident and comfortable in both these aspects to consider taking this course.
The YES competition requires an oral, group presentation to Wellington business owners as one challenge in this programme.
