Accounting at this level involves the processing and reporting for partnerships and companies. The course is based on International Accounting Standards and follows the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants’ guidelines.
You will understand how to form both kinds of entity; to prepare the accounting records and produce the final reports. The internal assessment involves an in-depth study of a New Zealand company’s annual report, a very useful tool for any shareholder.
This course is particularly relevant if you are considering studies at tertiary level in a business/commerce degree/diploma/certificate.
The course aims to develop and further encourage financial literacy in the context of New Zealand reporting entities and partnerships.
Course Content
The course content, based on the five achievement standards covers the following areas:
the conceptual basis of accounting based on the NZ Framework
preparation and understanding of financial statements for partnerships and companies
analysis and interpretation of a NZ listed company
management accounting including budgets and break even analysis
processing information for partnerships and companies
budgeting and breakeven analysis
preparation of financial reports for partnerships and companies
the analysis and interpretation of financial information (a listed company’s annual report).
At Year 13, if you don't have either level 1 or 2 accounting credits, you should have a strong interest in the subject matter, possess basic mathematical and analytical skills commensurate of the year level as well as basic report writing skills. A consultation with the HOD for Commerce or the TIC for Accounting will be required.
