Ko tōu reo, ko tōku reo, te tuakiri tangata. Tīhei uriuri, tīhei nakonako.
Learning a new language provides a means of communicating with people from another culture and exploring one’s own personal world. Languages and cultures play a key role in developing our personal, group, national, and human identities. Every language has its own ways of expressing meanings; each has intrinsic value and special significance for its users. - New Zealand Curriculum

By now you realise that you actually enjoy learning Spanish and you would like to know more. In Year 12 the focus will shift from talking about yourself, to talking about general issues and your opinion about them.
The main linguistic objective of this multi-level course will be to build on the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing at NCEA Level 2. The emphasis will be on the communicative use of language so that students gain confidence in their ability to comprehend and use everyday Spanish.
The study of Spanish culture, both in Spain and in South/Central America will continue to be an important feature of the curriculum but it will not be assessed.
The Year 12 course aims to build on the skills acquired at Year 11. Specifically you will start to develop the ability to read, write and speak on less familiar topics, with focus on learning to explain and debate ideas and opinions. Cultural aspects will draw on some key moments in Hispanic history and also on contemporary socio-economic issues in Spanish speaking countries. There will also be some focus in general on issues facing youth today and technology.
You will be required to listen to, to read and to comment in Spanish upon a variety of material, drawn from set courses, newspapers, magazines, literary texts, radio broadcasts or songs. This material will focus on functional language which will enable students to communicate in simple Spanish with native speakers in New Zealand or in a Spanish speaking country.
You will have the opportunity to go to Spain to practise and develop your Spanish skill and get to know and experience the Spanish culture.
You will need to bring a willingness to speak Spanish and take yourself a bit out of your comfort zone.
Recommended prior learning includes having taken Year 11 Spanish. Other students may gain entry at the discretion of the HOD – consultation is required.
Assessment
This course is assessed using a mixture of up to three internally assessed standards and two externally assessed standards. One of the assessments is an interaction portfolio (two conversations worth 5 credits), the second assessment is a writing portfolio (two writings worth 5 credits), and the third (optional) assessment is a spoken presentation (worth 4 credits). The externally assessed standards are: reading comprehension (5 credits) and listening comprehension (5 credits).
