Ko tōu reo, ko tōku reo, te tuakiri tangata. Tīhei uriuri, tīhei nakonako.
Samoan Language (Gagana Samoa) is spoken by nearly half a million people worldwide, including 85 thousand people in New Zealand, making it the third most widely spoken language in New Zealand (after English and te reo Māori). Whether students are learning Samoan to strengthen their identity as Samoan, to communicate with family members, for career enhancement or another reason, this subject will provide them with an opportunity to build on prior learning and to develop problem-solving, risk-taking and communication skills.
This course offers a combination of internal and external assessment.

This Samoan course will help you develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills through a range of topics such as family, home life and celebrations. The course is structured to allow flexibility in terms of the order in which topics you study and it also includes an open-ended topic that enables you to investigate an area of your own interest.
You will continue to build on your language and improve your understanding of how to apply this language in your writing and speaking. This course is a great way to gain an in-depth understanding of fa’aSamoa in a form that is relevant to the digital age we are finding ourselves in.
There are four modules and three internal assessments throughout the year.
You must begin with the first module SAO2001, but then you can complete learning sequences within the modules in any order. You should complete at least six or seven learning sequences before attempting the SAOINQ2 module.
● SAO2001 Where am I heading?
● SAO2002 Family in Samoa – seven learning sequences
● SAO2003 Family in New Zealand – nine learning sequences
● SAOINQ2 Inquiry
This course is accessed through an online learning environment - My Te Kura. You will be required to make and submit audio and/or video recordings, so a microphone and camera or mobile device are essential.
You will need to continue to bring an open mind to class, a willingness to speak in Samoan, to engage in the culture and of course, a desire to learn more!
It is beneficial to have your own laptop or chromebook device. If you do not have your own, you can use the computers available at school.
You will need to have completed the Level 1 course, however, you may be able to complete the course depending on your competence with the language.
School Policy for NCEA Assessment
You should be aware of the school procedures for NCEA assessment. They can be found on the school website at this link. There you will find answers to frequently asked questions about how NCEA works as well as guidance about how to apply for extensions, reconsiderations or the process for withdrawing from a standard.
Please note: Level 2 Samoan is delivered through Te Kura.
We hope you have a successful and interesting year!
