The Level 2 Physical Education course combines both practical and theory elements with the aim to develop the fundamental knowledge required for you to examine movement, sport and exercise. You will apply your theoretical knowledge to a range of practical situations.
The Level 2 course will challenge you both mentally and physically. It will provide you with an opportunity to learn more about your physical self in relation to sport, exercise and leisure.
In addition, you will develop a greater awareness of the sociological effects of sport through an investigation into societal issues. It is an excellent starting point if you are intending to enter tertiary education in the areas of Physical Education, Medicine, Physiotherapy, Teaching, Coaching, Recreation, and Exercise Consultancy/ Prescription or if you have an interest in understanding more about yourself.
Studying Physical Education at Year 12 will provide you with opportunities to engage in a wide range of theoretical and practical sporting contexts, allowing you to explore not only your participation in sport and physical activity, but also the impact sport has on wider society. The course is designed to give you varied experiences that enable you to think critically about, and be involved in, a wide range of sporting contexts, including Outdoor Education settings.
You will undertake five internal assessments throughout the year. There are no External Standards.
Key outcomes include:
Understand how and why biophysical principles relate to the learning of physical skills
Understand the application of biophysical principles to maximise training benefits for physical activity
Performance of applied physical skills and game tactics in physical activity in an applied setting Turbo Touch)
Examine the significance of a sporting event, physical activity, or a festival
Analyse the application of risk management strategies in Outdoor Education activities
Q - Can I study both Year 12 Physical Education and Year 12 Academy of Sport?
A - Yes you can choose to study both subjects in NCEA Level 2.
Q - What is the difference between Year 12 Physical Education and Year 12 Academy of Sport?
A - These courses are similar in content. Year 12 Physical Education combines both practical and theoretical components with a focus on being physically active and a desire to engage with sports science principles. Academy of Sport focuses on the individual athlete and the development of fitness, skill and game awareness in their chosen sport(s). No course endorsement is available in Academy of Sport.
Q - Can I study both Year 12 Physical Education and Year 12 Health Education?
A - Yes you can, they cover different phases of learning. Health Education is theory based and mostly assigned to the classroom. Health Education will support personal growth by helping students manage their own well-being, make health-enhancing choices; and use interpersonal skills to critically examine the socio-cultural aspects of the world around you.
Q - Is Year 12 Physical Education a university pathway?
A - Yes, between 30-60 students each year will study Year 12 Physical Education through to Year 13 Physical Education gaining University Entrance (14 Credits at Level 3).
Q- Can students who study Year 12 Physical Education take Health and Physical Education Scholarship?
A - Yes, HPE scholarship is open to all Year 11, 12 and 13 students who study Physical Education, Academy of Sport and or Health Education.
Q - What possible careers will Year 12 Physical Education begin to prepare me for?
A - Sports Technology, Nutrition, Teaching, Genetics, Outdoor Education, Physiotherapy, Coaching, Event management, Podiatry, Sports Statistician, Paramedic, Sports Management, Fitness trainer, Rehabilitation, Sports Marketing, Sports Supplements, Director of Sport, Human Health, Physiologist, Human Biology, Armed services, Gym Owner, Police/Fire service, Sports Coordinator, Sports Media, Physical therapy, Human Kinetics, Sports Broadcasting, Medicine, Occupational therapy and Health and Wellbeing.
Through both practical and theoretical components, you will learn how to think critically about sporting participation. Assessment is via a combination of written and practical submissions.
In addition to theoretical classroom based learning activities involving small group and full class discussions, individual learning tasks, and group work, you will also be involved in practical lessons. Content of practical lessons includes:
Outdoor education activities such as: Orienteering, Skyline Tramp, Stand Up Paddle Boarding and/or Indoor Rock Climbing.
Performance, analysis and improvement strategies applied to a physical sporting skill of your choice
Designing and instructing a training session (in small groups) for a sport of your choice
Practice and game-based sessions to improve and display athletic performance in Turbo Touch (practically assessed unit).
Key Outcomes:
At the completion of this course you will be able to:
Participate in physical activities and describe how doing so influences well-being
Demonstrate knowledge of body structure and function in a physical activity.
Demonstrate the movement of various physical activities.
Demonstrate strategies to improve the performance of a physical activity and describe the outcomes.
Demonstrate interpersonal skills in a group and explain how these skills impact on others.
You should have an interest in: physical activity, sport, and movement; thinking critically to challenge assumptions through critical reflections; an and interest in applying theoretical knowledge into practical settings. You may have an interest in a potential career in the sporting and physical activity industry.
For practical sessions you are required to bring appropriate mufti physical activity clothing and sport shoes. A personal learning device is recommended during theory lessons.
