Year 12 DANCE
(Previously known as Performing Arts)
(Previously known as Performing Arts)
Te toi whakairo, ka ihiihi, ka wehiwehi, ka aweawe te ao katoa.
The arts are powerful forms of expression that recognise, value, and contribute to the unique bicultural and multicultural character of Aotearoa New Zealand, enriching the lives of all New Zealanders. The arts have their own distinct languages that use both verbal and non-verbal conventions, mediated by selected processes and technologies. Through movement, sound, and image, the arts transform people’s creative ideas into expressive works that communicate layered meanings.

This course offers students a unique opportunity to learn and engage in a variety of different dance styles, working with professional tutors across the year. The course is largely practical and performance-based, with standards offered in Dance, but also opportunities in Stage Tech and Design as well. Year 12 will be a foundation year for students who may wish to continue this subject in Year 13 and in Tertiary education.
This course is fully University Entrance approved and offers 18 internal achievement standard credits.
Every year professional tutors from Pump Dance studios work with students to teach them original choreography in the style of their choosing. This typically includes different genres of Hip-Hop and modern dance styles.
Year 12 Dance focuses on the development of dance skills to a range of learners. This includes those who are already proficient in dance and those trying it for the first time. Throughout the year you will:
Demonstrate an awareness of dance in its many forms and how it has evolved throughout history, as well as how it's expressed and created in different communities and cultures.
Develop practical knowledge
Explore movement with a developing awareness of the dance elements of body, space, time, energy, and relationships.
Develop ideas
Create and explore movement in response to stimuli (theme, idea, narrative etc.)
You will learn to dance in a variety of styles with the flexibility to cater for the interests of the class. Specialist tutors will be brought in throughout the first three terms to teach the students in a range of genres. The skills learnt will contribute to assessment activities.
You will have the ability to co-construct a personalised program that caters to your interests as well as that of the class.
You will be assisted by your teacher, as well as local professionals who will further your skills in certain genres and styles. In the past this has included Hip-hop, Reggaeton, Breaking, South African Dance, Contemporary.
You will engage in a range of activities including:
Performing group dances
Choreographing group dances
Reflecting on rehearsal and performance practices
Learning and working with professional dancers and peers
These activities will all contribute to the assessment of NZQA Level 2 Dance standards.
These standards include:
Perform a Group Dance (4 credits)
Perform a Repertoire of Dance (6 Credits)
Reflecting on rehearsal processes (4 credits)
Perform a Solo or Duo Dance (4 Credits)
You will also have the opportunity to replace certain standards with Script Writing, Lighting/Sound, Costuming if this is an interest or passion of yours.
You may pick up this subject at Year 12, but a study of Dance at Year 11 is helpful. You should have a strong interest or enthusiasm for the subject.
You will also need:
to be active and willing to learn new styles of dance
an open mind and the will to focus.
the ability to listen and work autonomously.
to accept feedback and act on feed forward.
