Level 2 Health offers you opportunities to support personal growth by: helping students manage their own well-being; make health-enhancing choices; and use interpersonal skills to critically examine the socio-cultural aspects of the world around you. You will learn how to communicate effectively and observe issues from different perspectives, allowing you to analyse an issue, looking critically at well-being issues affecting communities, plan and take collective action.
Level 2 Health will teach you to be resilient; learn to identify and minimise risks; develop strategies for coping with adversity; analyse, evaluate, and, where appropriate, take action to enhance the well-being of individuals (self), communities (others), and society. Level 2 Health will develop interpersonal skills and strengthens leadership, is community focused with a focus on health promotion avenues of learning, aligning well with Wellington College 'COLL Values'.
You will have choice over the health issues and models you examine, in which course content will be created around your own interests and needs. Level 2 Health aligns with, and progresses from Junior Health and Physical Education curriculum and Level 1 Health content. It will lead to Level 3, which is a University approved subject amongst New Zealand tertiary providers.
Level 2 Health will provide you with foundation knowledge and pathways into potential careers in the social and health science’s: education, psychology, sociology, philosophy, politics, law, economics, medicine, health, justice, and social services, nursing, youth workers, community/social workers, physical education, teaching, counselling, nutrition and more.
The main focus of Level 2 Health is to equip you with the skills and knowledge to critically examine the effect of health determinants on Hauora at a personal, interpersonal and societal level, with a particular focus on the influences, consequences and strategies of these effects.
Level 2 Health assessments will require you to apply critical thinking skills using Sociological, Psychological and Health Promotion models, hence excellent communication and literacy skills are advantageous.
Health is a valued subject which will enable you to think about yourselves, your identity, strengths and attributes in a safe and inclusive environment. This course aims to establish relationships and understanding for you to become knowledgeable and reflective about y personal health and well-being, while gaining mana and confidence to grow into a resilient and strong individual. These objectives accommodate other curriculum subjects such as Physical Education, History, English and Te Ao Māori. This course is an influential platform for the students to be engaged with New Zealand’s multicultural society.

You will examine influences on local and international health issues, the consequences and implications on well-being, and discover strategies that could be implemented to minimise harm. Students will undertake research, self-directed learning, exploring their own and others' views and opinions would enjoy this course.
Three Internal Assessment Standards:
AS91236 2.2 Evaluate factors that influence people’s ability to manage change
AS91237 2.3 Take action to enhance an aspect of people’s well-being within the school or wider community
AS91239 2.5 Analyse issues related to sexuality and gender to develop strategies for addressing the issues
One External Assessment Standard (choice of one from the following):
AS91235 2.1 Analyse an adolescent health issue
AS91238 2.4 Analyse an interpersonal issue(s) that places personal safety at risk
A Background Junior Health and Physical Education knowledge from Year 9 and 10
Inquisitive disposition, especially with regard to social issues
The desire to critically analyse an issue from both sides
An enjoyment of Social Sciences
An open mind, empathy, self-motivation
A desire to develop a keener sense of self
A desire to contribute to community health promotion
You will negotiate the way you're assessed with your teacher from the selected standards that this course offers. While there is flexibility in the mode of assessment, generally three internal assessments are completed as a written report and one external examination assessment.
In your external examination, you will have a choice in selecting either Analyse an adolescent health issue, or Analyse an interpersonal issue(s) that places personal safety at risk
