English:

Enhances lifelong learning and effective communication skills such as reading, writing, speaking, viewing and listening. By understanding how language works, students are equipped to make appropriate language choices and apply them in a range of contexts.
Contributes to your developing sense of identity and connection with the world, and your awareness of Aotearoa’s bi-cultural heritage. You will learn how to deconstruct and interrogate a variety of texts in order to understand the power of language to enrich and shape your own and others’ lives.
Allows you to develop skills that empower you to think critically and express yourself creatively.
(Adapted from TKI)
You will develop the ability to be a lifelong learner, who is critical and creative, by reading, viewing and listening to a range of complex texts connected to a theme, and analysing the effect of language and structural choices made by writers.
You will learn how to express your ideas accurately and convincingly, both orally and in writing.
The course content, based on five achievement standards, involves:
Analysing and appreciating how features of written and visual texts work together to create effects.
Close reading unfamiliar texts to analyse the effect of language and structural choices made by writers.
Developing connected ideas in a portfolio of accurate creative or formal writing, using appropriate language features.
Presenting sustained ideas in an oral performance (either an opinionated speech or a monologue).
Studied texts may include:
Extended written text (Novels and/or Plays)
Short written text (Short stories and/or poetry)
Visual text (Posters and/or Film)
Oral text (Speeches and/or Plays).
When analysing texts, you can expect to participate in discussion and debate, to complete written responses such as paragraphs and essays, and to use critical thinking activities such as Thinker’s Keys and 3-Level Guides.
Homework
You should be reading for pleasure. Other than that, the only homework expectations are that you complete work started in class, and work on some assessments at home.
This course is recommended for students who completed Year 11 English with sound understanding. Class placement is ultimately at the discretion of the HoD, in consultation with students, class teachers and whānau.
