Year 11 Physical Education is a subject for students who thrive on being physically active, love sport and wish to engage with Sports Science principles.
The Year 11 course combines both practical and theory elements of Physical Education. The major focus for Year 11 Physical Education is on participating in an engaged and consistent manner. If you are keen to explore potential sport-based careers, or have an interest in being involved in physical activity and sporting contexts, then Physical Education is a good fit for you.
Studying Physical Education at Year 11 will provide you with opportunities to engage in a wide range of theoretical and practical sporting contexts, allowing you to explore not only your participation in sport and physical activity, but also that of others. The course is designed to give you varied experiences that enable you to think critically about, and be involved in, a wide range of sporting contexts.
Studying Physical Education at Year 11 aims to establish a broad understanding of Physical Education related concepts through a variety of practical and written assessments.

Q - Can I study both Year 11 Physical Education and Year 11 Academy of Sport?
A - Not in Year 11. However, you can choose to study both subjects in NCEA Level 2.
Q - What is the difference between Year 11 Physical Education and Year 11 Academy of Sport?
A - These courses are similar in content. Year 11 Physical Education combines both practical and theoretical components with a focus on being physically active and a desire to engage with sports science principles. Academy of Sport focuses on the individual athlete and the development of fitness, skill and game awareness in their chosen sport(s).
Q - Can I study both Year 11 Physical Education and Year 11 Health Education?
A - Yes you can, they cover different phases of learning. Health Education is theory based and mostly assigned to the classroom. Health Education will support personal growth by helping students manage their own well-being, make health-enhancing choices; and use interpersonal skills to critically examine the socio-cultural aspects of the world around you.
Q - Is Year 11 Physical Education a university pathway?
A - Yes, between 60-90 students each year will study Year 11 Physical Education all the way through to Year 13 Physical Education gaining University Entrance (14 Credits at Level 3).
Q- Can students who study Year 11 Physical Education take Health and Physical Education Scholarship?
A - Yes, HPE scholarship is open to all Year 11, 12 and 13 students who study Physical Education, Academy of Sport and or Health Education.

Through both practical and theoretical components, you will learn how to think critically about sporting participation and sport science principles.

This course is open to all Year 11 students, and will build on Junior Health and Physical Education knowledge and experiences.
You should have an interest in physical activity and movement, discussing personal experiences, and challenging assumptions through critical reflections.
Year 11 Physical Education is for students who are motivated, well organised, self determined, love being challenged and have a positive attitude for growth and learning.
For practical sessions you are required to bring appropriate mufti physical activity clothing (Junior HPE gear is optional) and sport shoes. A personal learning device is highly recommended during theory lessons.
Year 11 Physical Education is assessed using our WC Learning Progression Framework and provides an excellent foundation for students wishing to continue onto NCEA Level 2 Physical Education, Academy of Sport or Experiential Physical Education.
